I often find myself with the desire to create something for the sake of creating it, as I am sure anyone in the art or design field can relate to.
The problem of course lies with what to make - and with the computer and the internet offering an exorbitant number of ways for us to distract ourselves how do we find inspiration without ending up lost in twitter, facebook, or youtube for hours?
That isn’t to say inspiration can’t be had watching Susan Boyle for the 20th time but here I would like to present a series of sites that might offer some respite from the failure mocking tones of keyboard cat.
and #1 on my list is:
Space Collective
Space Collective is probably one of my favorite sites for curing boredom and finding inspiration both intellectually as well as in art and design. Unlike the majority of inspirational sites Space Collective is only tangentially relates to the arts and design, however, instead of looking endlessly at images of other designers you are presented with complex ideas that require you to think and question knowledge, which to me is of a lot more value and generally leads to stronger ideas. They host a huge range of posts and images that run the gamut from the scientific to the philosophical, from the sub-atomically small to the mind blowingly large.
“Zero and infinity always looked suspiciously alike. Multiply zero by anything and you get zero. Multiply infinity by anything and you get infinity. Dividing a number by zero yields infinity; dividing a number by infinity yields zero. Adding zero to a number leaves the number unchanged. Adding a number to infinity leaves infinity unchanged….Zero and infinity are two sides of the same coin - equal and opposite, yin and yang, equally powerful adversaries at either end of the realm of numbers. The troublesome nature of zero lies with the strange power of the infinite, and it is possible to understand the infinite by studying zero.” - Charles Seife
Essentially it is a site full of things to wrap your head around and screw you up. Also make sure to check out the gallery which is also full of images and quotes apart from the articles.
I’ll keep it short because if I even have a single reader at this point I would be rather amazed but I will continue this series in the hopes that someday someone’s incurable designers block might someday be remedied.
